THE RESILIENCE PROJECT
Our Science
In 2014, the MyOutcomes clinical team set out to create a resilience training program that would make advanced behavioural, social, and neural sciences affordable and accessible to all. To accomplish this, our clinical team continually maintains an ongoing posture of secondary research to determine new discoveries in these advanced sciences — coupled with our experiences working with people over the last 20 years. The following biographies convey the content of The Resilient Mind Project and how it is applied to our training sessions.
THE MINDS BEHIND THE METHOD
Biographies
Eight leading researchers whose work shapes how The Resilient Mind Project is designed and delivered.
01 · FOCUS
Dr. Norman Doidge
Neuroscience, neuroplasticity, brain, psychiatry, and behavioral health.
APPLICATION TO THE RESILIENT MIND PROJECT
The Resilient Mind team has been significantly influenced by Dr. Doidge’s work — extending training over longer periods to work at the brain’s pace of change. Our project runs over a ten-week period, an hour and a half each week, and includes in-person games, two eLearning sessions, and telephone mentoring.

Dr. Brené Brown
Vulnerability, courage, shame, and empathy.
APPLICATION TO THE RESILIENT MIND PROJECT
Courage and vulnerability accelerate how participants think, feel, and desire. The brilliance of Dr. Brown’s work lies not only in her research but in how she personally demonstrated vulnerability and courage. This has shaped how we create a safe environment for people to practice honesty and vulnerability — which produces deep engagement. Our gamification includes queries on emotional and relationship skills and videos that lead participants toward deeper engagement.

Dr. John Cacioppo
Loneliness, human relationships, social neuroscience, evolution, and social isolation.
APPLICATION TO THE RESILIENT MIND PROJECT
Stress and loneliness are synonymous. Dr. Cacioppo’s work provided empirical validation that a person suffering from loneliness will inevitably experience much stress. We’ve applied the link between engagement and resilience by creating fun, learning activities and questions that build deeper engagement and increase resilience among participants.

Dr. Scott D. Miller
Measuring outcomes, behavioral health sciences, and progress.
APPLICATION TO THE RESILIENT MIND PROJECT
Measuring progress along the resilience journey is critical to producing measurable results in participants’ lives. Through the ORS and SRS measures developed by Dr. Miller, we track session-by-session progress to learn who requires support and how to specifically support them.

Dr. Robert (Rob) Anda
Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), trauma, mental health, and determinants of health.
APPLICATION TO THE RESILIENT MIND PROJECT
Understanding ACEs in participants accelerates the ability to overcome them. The mystery of psychological pain becomes clear, and through our mentoring programs we help pinpoint the stumbling blocks that trip people up. We are thankful for Dr. Anda’s contributions during his time on our product development advisory board.
FULL BIOGRAPHY
A graduate of Rush Medical College (1979), Dr. Anda received board certification in internal medicine in 1982 and completed a fellowship in preventive medicine at the University of Wisconsin, earning a Master’s in Epidemiology. Author of more than 200 publications, his research spans disease surveillance, behavioral and mental health, cardiovascular disease, and childhood determinants of health. In 1990 he played a principal role in designing the landmark Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Study — a large-scale, CDC-funded study of more than 17,000 patients that showed ACEs are common and have a profound negative effect on lifelong health and well-being. He works at the CDC as a senior scientific consultant in Atlanta and speaks internationally across public health, medicine, corrections, and social-service systems.
05 · FOCUS
Dr. Daniel Goleman
Emotional intelligence, resilience, sociology, clinical psychology, and meditation.
APPLICATION TO THE RESILIENT MIND PROJECT
The fact that our world now understands EQ brings greater value to a person’s life than IQ has allowed our team to focus on what really matters when developing resilience. We incorporate emotional-intelligence training — pioneered by Dr. Goleman in 1995 — through activities that build resilience into the Resilient Mind program.
FULL BIOGRAPHY
An internationally known psychologist born in Stockton, California, Dr. Goleman graduated magna cum laude from Amherst College and earned a Ford Foundation scholarship to Harvard, where he pursued clinical psychology from an interdisciplinary perspective spanning anthropology, sociology, and psychology. His doctoral research examined meditation as an intervention in stress arousal, and he furthered his studies in India and Sri Lanka. He wrote for Psychology Today and covered psychology and the brain for The New York Times. His 1995 book Emotional Intelligence was a bestseller for a year and a half, with more than 5 million copies in print in 40 languages, followed by Working With Emotional Intelligence (1998). A co-founder of the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL), he currently co-directs the Consortium for Research on Emotional Intelligence in Organizations at Rutgers University.

08 · FOCUS
Dr. Larry Crabb
Counseling, ministry, engagement, community, and resilience.
APPLICATION TO THE RESILIENT MIND PROJECT
Our project has been most influenced by Dr. Crabb’s core insight: if we can create deep levels of engagement between people in our communities, resilience becomes a by-product. The Resilient Mind project’s primary focus is to create engagement in participants — which wards off stress.
